The Government of India today said the financial meltdown in the US has had an impact on many sectors including IT and BPO.
Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Jyotiraditya M. Scindia told the Rajya Sabha that the meltdown being a global phenomenon, there is only a limited amount of measures that individual companies are able to take.
Some aspects that are being looked into by various organization include: focus on productivity, efficiency, resource utilization etc., wage moderation, optimal lateral hiring, etc., increasing levels of efficiency for asset utilization like real estate, IT infrastructure, etc.
He said, as per the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), most companies are working to increase their levels of utilization of resources and look to redeploy personnel within the organization where possible.
The minister said Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in Telecommunications and I.T. Sector in 2006-07 and 2007-08 was Rs 117,858.23 million and Rs 56,233.00 million respectively.
In electronics it was Rs 1,853.25 million and Rs 4,328.60 million, whereas telecommunications sector got an investment of Rs 21,550.77 million in 2006-07 and Rs 51,026.09 million in 2007-08.
9639 post offices computerized
Meanwhile, Minister of Communications and Information Technology A. Raja informed the Rajya Sabha that 9639 post offices in the country have been computerized up to March 31, 2008 and 2504 Post Offices have been modernized (Improved Ergonomics). He said, in the current year, under 'Project Arrow' 500 Post Offices are being modernized.
He said as per NASSCOM reports, the total software and services exports in 2006-07 and 2007-08 are US$ 31.3 billion and US$ 40.3 billion respectively.
